Mila Turajlić / short biography
Mila Turajlić, born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is an award-winning filmmaker and archive ‘artivist’ whose works include CINEMA KOMUNISTO (2010), and IDFA-winner THE OTHER SIDE OF EVERYTHING (2017). Her most documentary diptych NON-ALIGNED & CINÉ-GUERRILLAS: SCENES FROM THE LABUDOVIĆ REELS (2022) - an archival road trip through the birth of the Third World - was described by The New York Times as ‘a visually arresting inquiry into what it takes to envision a new world’. In 2018 Mila was commissioned by MoMA New York to create video installations for their landmark exhibition on Yugoslav modernist architecture. She is the founder of the NON-ALIGNED NEWSREELS research project (nonalignednewsreels.com) an artistic exploration of the ‘orphaned’ status of film archives made by Yugoslavia in a gesture of ‘ciné-solidarity’ with the non-aligned world. Performative and video iterations of the project were curated for IDFA on Stage, international exhibitions and biennials (Berlin’22, Belgrade’22, Sharjah’25). In 2020 Mila was invited to join the AMPAS (Oscars) Documentary Branch. She was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2022.

Her most recent film, a documentary diptych Scenes from the Labudović Reels: Non-Aligned and Ciné-Guerrillas premiered at the Toronto IFF and IDFA in 2022. Her previous film, The Other Side of Everything premiered at the Toronto IFF in 2017, and went on to win 32 awards including the prestigious IDFA Award for Best Documentary Film. It was a New York Times Critics' Pick, and was named one of the best films of 2018 by TheNew Yorker's Richard Brody. The film was HBO Europe’s first co-production with Serbia, and had a record-breaking theatrical release in Serbia. Mila's debut documentary film Cinema Komunisto, premiered at IDFA and the Tribeca Film Festival, and went on to win 16 awards including the Gold Hugo at the Chicago Int’l Film Festival in 2011, and the FOCAL Award for Creative Use of Archival Footage. Theatrically released in France, UK, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, Cinema Komunisto was broadcast across Europe.
In her work with archives, Mila researches the intersection of personal and national memories, seeking to reactivate forgotten histories, through forms ranging from lecture performances and video art to analytical essays. In 2018 she was commissioned by MoMA to create a series of archive-based video installations for their landmark exhibition on Yugoslav modernist architecture. Her next exhibition & performance project THE NON-ALIGNED NEWSREELS was selected for development in the prestigious Cph:Lab in 2021.
A graduate of the London School of Economics in politics and international relations (BSc & MSc), Mila obtained her Phd in cinema studies from the University of Westminster. She teaches documentary and creative use of archives at SciencesPo and INASup in Paris, as well as at a documentary programs run by the Balkan Documentary Center, and Scottish Documentary Institute.
Mila has been awarded grants from the Serbian Film Center, CNC-Cinémas du monde (France), EURIMAGES, the Doha Film Institute (Qatar) and the Jan Vrijman Fund (Netherlands). She is an alumnus of Archidoc, Documentary Campus, IDFAcademy and EURODOC. In 2020 Mila was a Chicken&Egg Award grantee and invited to join the AMPAS (Oscars) Documentary Branch . She is a 2021 TED Fellow and was a Fellow at Columbia University's Institute for Ideas & Imagination. In 2021 Mila was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the Government of France.
Mila produced the Magnificent 7 Festival of European Feature Documentary Film in Belgrade since it’s creation in 2005, with the aim of creating an audience for cinematic auteur-driven documentary films in Serbia. She is a founding member of DOKSerbia, the Association of documentary filmmakers of Serbia, and served as the first President of the Board.
